Ever felt let down by someone who you made a promise, and then broke it?
That’s what millions of Android users must be feeling right now when it comes to Google and Android.
Last September, Google announced that mobile devices running the new version of Android (5.0, also known as Lollipop) would have full-disk encryption enabled by default.
Here is how Google announced the news to the media in a statement:
“For over three years Android has offered encryption, and keys are not stored off of the device, so they cannot be shared with law enforcement. As part of our next Android release, encryption will be enabled by default out of the box, so you won’t even have to think about turning it on.”And each of every one of us who cares about security and privacy said, “This is a good thing. Well done Google.”
The news of the “encryption-by-default” was reaffirmed in a blog post from Google’s Android team in October last year:
More secure, from the first time you turn it onPeople use safes and combination locks to protect their physical goods. With digital information, encryption acts like a safe to protect your information from thieves and snoops. That’s why we’ve worked hard to provide this added security for our users, which will now be the default from the moment you power on a new device running Lollipop, keeping your data safer without needing you to fiddle around in the settings. Full device encryption occurs at first boot, using a unique key that never leaves the device. This is the safest way to encrypt your device, which is why it’s how we’ve built encryption on Android since it first launched three years ago.
It all sounds good, right? Wrong.
Because we were a little hasty in breaking open the champagne last year, as Ars Technica has discovered that Google has quietly gone back on its promise and not all new Lollipop devices are going to have encryption by default.
It turns out that while Google’s own Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 devices do indeed have encryption enabled by default, other older devices upgraded to Lollipop are not so lucky.
Furthermore, brand new third-party Android devices (such as the second-generation Moto E and Galaxy S6 demonstrated at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona) are also not encrypted by default.
The discrepancy between what Google said last year and what is now being seen on third-party Android Lollipop devices is explained by the OEM guidelines that manufacturers must follow to have their Lollipop devices approved by Google:
If the device implementation has a lock screen, the device MUST support full-disk encryption of the application private data (/data patition) as well as the SD card partition if it is a permanent, non-removable part of the device.For devices supporting full-disk encryption, the full-disk encryption SHOULD be enabled all the time after the user has completed the out-of-box experience. While this requirement is stated as SHOULD for this version of the Android platform, it is very strongly RECOMMENDED as we expect this to change to MUST in the future versions of Android.In other words, the manufacturer still has a choice whether they currently enable full-disk encryption or not. And performance issues may mean that some third-party Lollipop devices will not yet have encryption by default.
Ultimately there was a battle between security and performance. The full-disk encryption may have had too much of a hit on some devices, and so Google – fearing resistance from both customers and manufacturers – made the requirement optional. For now at least.
So, if you want your Android to be fully encrypted you will still have to enable the option for yourself.
Let’s hope not too many people have been lulled into a false sense of security by Google’s statements of last year.

Luand in considerare evolutia conceptului de Internet of Things si dezvoltarea unui alt concept – Internet of Us, Kaspersky Lab colaboreaza cu comunitatea suedeza de bio-hacking, BioNyfiken, pentru a analiza procesul de utilizare a corpurilor umane pentru accesarea internetului.
In trecut, acest proces a fost subiectul filmelor de Hollywood si al romanelor stiintifico-fantastice, insa, in 2015, numarul oamenilor hibrizi se afla intr-o continua crestere. Luand in considerare directia inventiilor tehnologice si adoptarea in masa a dispozitivelor precum stimulatoarele cardiace, pompele pentru insulina, aparatele auditive si sistemele de stimulare a proceselor cognitive, tot mai multi oameni pot fi considerati partial roboti.
Informatii recente descriu un nou tip de oameni hibrizi – utilizatorii care isi implanteaza cipuri nu din motive medicale, ci pentru eficientizarea activitatilor zilnice precum controlul incuietorilor usilor, achizitiile online si accesarea computerelor printr-o miscare a mainii. Astfel, capacitatea de stocare a datelor personale prin intermediul implanturilor ridica noi probleme de securitate.
BioNyfiken, o comunitate suedeza de bio-hacking, ia masuri pentru normalizarea acestui fenomen pentru a-l implementa la scara larga. Comunitatea BioNyfiken considera ca un implant nu este diferit de cercei sau de tatuaje si este de parere ca din ce in ce mai multi utilizatori vor opta pentru implanturi cu compatibilitate NFC (Near Field Communication) pentru a stoca serii de informatii.
„Conceptul Internet of Things presupune dezvoltarea de produse pentru a le pune rapid pe piata,” spune Patrick Mylund Nielsen, Senior Security Researcher la Kaspersky Lab. „Utilizatorii fie se gandesc tarziu la securitatea dispozitivelor, fie nu se gandesc deloc. Desi bio-hacking-ul a fost un subiect al romanelor stiintifico-fantastic pentru o perioada indelungata, acestea nu au analizat si implicatiile: Ce se intampla atunci cand informatiile confidentiale sunt stocate pe un cip implantat? Poate cineva deveni o copie a noastra daca ne atinge? Am putea fi urmariti unde mergem? Cuvantul „nyfiken” inseamna curios si noi suntem curiosi sa aflam raspunsurile la aceste intrebari,” incheie Patrick Mylund Nielsen.
„Tehnologia se intampla acum,” spune Hannes Sjoblad, unul dintre fondatorii BioNyfiken. „Observam cresterea comunitatii de utilizatori care experimenteaza prin implanturi care le permit sa indeplineasca anumite cerinte zilnice rapid si usor – accesul in cladiri, deblocarea dispozitivelor personale fara a introduce un cod PIN si accesul la numeroase date stocate. „Consider ca evolutia acestei tehnologii este un alt moment important in istoria interactiunii dintre oameni si computere, similar lansarii primelor computere cu Windows sau primelor ecrane cu tehnologie screen. Fiecare dispozitiv cu care ne identificam, fie ca este o cheie sau o cartela electronica, este inca un lucru care ne influenteaza vietile,” incheie Hannes Sjoblad.
„Consideram ca este important sa lucram cu experti de top in securitate cibernetica pentru ca inteleg tehnologia si ne ajuta sa identificam riscurile. Kaspersky Lab este un partener de cercetare ideal pentru BioNyfiken. Expertii Kaspersky Lab nu doar ca au pregatire de top, ci au fost si initiatorii cercetarilor inovatoare cu privire la tehnologiile noi,” mai adauga Hannes Sjoblad.
„Abia asteptam sa lucram cu expertii Kaspersky Lab intr-un proiect deschis de cercetare care sa exploreze vulnerabilitatile acestor cipuri in activitatile zilnice ale utilizatorilor, pentru a putea identifica modalitati de rezolvare in cazul in care acestea exista.”
In plus fata de cercetarea in parteneriat cu BioNyfiken, Kaspersky Lab va organiza evenimente impreuna cu comunitatea de bio-hacking in Suedia si pe teritoriul Europei pentru a discuta aspectele referitoare la securitatea cibernetica si la spatiul privat. Exista numeroase cladiri hi-tech in Suedia, precum Epicenter care dezvolta business-uri care utilizeaza implanturi NFC in mod regulat pentru activitati variate, inlocuind alte dispozitive.
„Eu prefer sa nu imi implantez un cip,” spune Eugene Kaspersky, Chairman si CEO la Kaspersky Lab. „Insa, inteleg evolutia tehnologiei si cred ca vor exista utilizatori care isi vor asuma riscuri, vor testa limitele tehnologiei si vor experimenta pe propriile corpuri. Mi-ar placea sa faca asta constienti de implicatii si sa tina cont de siguranta inainte, nu dupa ce s-a intamplat ceva, cum este cazul de cele mai multe ori,” comenteaza Eugene Kaspersky.
„Imi pare foarte bine ca BioNyfiken a ales sa lucreze cu noi pentru a analiza implicatiile de securitate legate de utilizarea corpurilor umane pentru accesarea internetului. Poate ca expertii Kaspersky Lab nu vor descoperi nicio vulnerabilitate, insa, daca oamenii vor avea cipuri NFC in corpuri, as vrea sa ma asigur ca am analizat atent orice posbilititate,” mai adauga Eugene Kaspersky.

A whole lot of things gone in the official kickoff of Mobile World Congress 2015, but a unique phone with a curved screen on both sides of the device acquired everybody’s attention. That’s what unveiled by Samsung late Sunday.
Samsung has officially unveiled its next-generation flagship Smartphones — Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge. This time, the company didn’t just focus on the specs and features, but also on design — unique and sleek.
1. EYE-CATCHING PREMIUM DESIGN
Both Samsung Galaxy S6 and Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge comes with a sleek glass-and-metal body on the front and back.
On one hand, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge has a screen that curves around both sides with a comfortable grip, giving the phone a much smarter look. While, the Samsung Galaxy S6 has the most beautiful appearence to ever exist in the entire Samsung's S series.
The new Galaxy smartphones are made of 'stronger metal' and comes with the toughest glass, Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection, which makes it harder to bend.
The Gorilla Glass 4 rear panel of the new Samsung Galaxy S6 smartphones comes in attractive colors such as Topaz Blue and White Pearl, which changes appearance based on how much light is reflected off of the glass.
Both Samsung new Galaxy smartphones are lightweight — Samsung Galaxy S6 is 6.8 mm thin and weighs 138g, while the Samsung Galaxy Edge is 7.0mm and weighs 132g. The new Galaxy smartphones' design looks and feels pretty sweet and attractive.
2. SUPER AND WIRELESS CHARGING
The brand new Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge support WPC and PMA wireless charging, so you can now charge the smartphones wirelessly. The new wireless charging technology adopted by both the smartphones set a new industry standard for universal wireless charging.
The Samsung Galaxy S6 has a 2,550mAh battery, while the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge has a 2,600mAh battery. The battery for both smartphones lasts for up to 12 hours on Wi-Fi and, Samsung claims that they supports incredibly fast wired charging, "faster than any other smartphone in the industry."
Samsung claims you'll be able to get four hours of battery life with just 10 minutes of charging the Samsung Galaxy S6. To get to 100%, the new Galaxy smartphones takes roughly half the time of the iPhone 6 to charge.
3. STANDARD DISPLAY
The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge is the first smartphone to feature curved display on both sides, which creates a more eye-catching display than we've seen on any other Galaxy S series.
Both Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge are strikingly similar with the same 5.1 Quad HD Super AMOLOED display and 2,560 x 1,440 resolution, which offers a very high pixel density of 577ppi. Only the difference is that Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge sports a 5.1 Quad HD Super AMOLED but with dual edge display.
4. SMARTER AND SPEEDIER CAMERA
The camera is the another real standout feature the new Samsung Galaxy S6 smartphones have. Both the smartphones come with a 16MP OIS rear camera and a 5MP front camera, same as the Galaxy S5, but added Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) for low-light shots and Auto Real-Time HDR for fast and easy color balance.
The company says the camera will now launch almost immediately in 0.7 seconds just by tapping the home button twice on the front of either phone. Both the back and front-facing cameras offer a high dynamic range (HDR) mode that improves the contrast and low-light performance.
At the launch, Samsung displayed low-light photos taken by the iPhone 6 Plus and the brand new Galaxy S6 side by side on the large screen. The latter won both for photos and video. In a video demo, a couple sitting in front of a fountain at night almost looked like silhouettes on the iPhone 6 video, but were clearly illuminated in the new Samsung Galaxy S6 video.
Camera features include: Quick Launch, Tracking AF, Auto Real-time HDR(Front & Rear) , F1.9, Low Light Video(Front & Rear), High Clear Zoom, IR Detect White Balance, Virtual Shot, Slow Motion, Fast Motion, Pro Mode, Selective Focus.
5. SAMSUNG PAY
The Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge are the first in series of Samsung smartphones to offer mobile-payments system. Samsung Pay, a new, easy-to-use mobile payment service, will launch on Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge in the United States during the second half of this year.
Protected by Samsung KNOX, fingerprint scanning, and advanced tokenization, Samsung Pay allows both Near Field Communication (NFC) and a new proprietary technology called Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) payments. This means Samsung Pay will work with potentially many more machines than Apple Pay.
6. FINGERPRINT SENSOR
Like Apple’s fingerprint scanner TouchID, Samsung now offers fingerprint scanner in its new flagship phone, the Samsung Galaxy S6. However, the Galaxy S6 improves more on the feature by replacing the "sliding" of your fingerprint across the button, by just pressing your finger on the screen.

Potrivit serviciului de informatii canadian, in urma analizei malware-ului EvilBunny din decembrie 2014, Babar a fost si numele de cod al unei operatiuni a unui serviciu secret national numit Snowglobe. Acest lucru arata ca Babar ar putea fi a doua tulpina malware identificata a fi fost conectata la campania spyware Snowglobe. Numele de “Babar” vine de la o serie de carti frantuzesti pentru copii, al carei erou este un elefant.
Din cauza similitudinilor dintre ele, expertii in securitate de la G Data sunt convinsi ca cele doua tulpini provin de la aceeasi dezvoltatorii.
