Hacking Satellites

Recommended Posts

Tempting, no? All that data, flowing freely in open space, back and forth to the ground — anyone with a radio should be able to pick it up and start decoding.

Of course, cheapskates have been stealing satellite TV for decades. When I was a teenager, those big backyard dishes seemed to be everywhere, swiping free programming; nowadays it’s all about receiver decoding. That’s illegal, by the way, and also increasingly difficult; check out this video to see just how technical it’s become.

Military satellites are simply too powerfully encrypted. That doesn’t stop people from paying very close, even obsessive attention to them:

By coordinating their efforts, amateur observers in Europe, North America, and South Africa monitor satellites at different phases of their journeys and extrapolate the precise dimensions of their orbits. Astonishingly, despite the hobbyists’ modest resources – most observe part-time from their balconies and backyards with equipment available at RadioShack – they are good enough to spot almost anything the US’s National Reconnaissance Office, with its estimated $7 billion budget, blasts into space.

Interested in joining that kind of fun? N2YO is a hobbyist site that lets you track satellites of all kind in real time, as they fly right over your head. Their database is impressively detailed.

If you want to actually capture signals, NOAA weather satellites are the way to go. Here’s an explanation of how to grab your own imagery and decode it directly.

Finally, the real frontier: hacking the downloads and uploads. “It’s like a very big Wi-Fi network that’s easy to access,” says a security expert, in Forbes:

Cybersecurity researcher Leonardo Nve presented a variety of tricks for gaining access to and exploiting satellite Internet connections. Using less than $75 in tools, Nve … says that he can intercept DVB signals to get free high-speed Internet. [He] also went a step further, describing how he was able to use satellite signals to anonymize his Internet connection, gain access to private networks and even intercept satellite Internet users’ requests for Web pages and replace them with spoofed sites.

And once they start messing with GPS — that’s when things will get serious. Welcome to hacking’s High Frontier.

Cam vag topicul insa acel site n2yo e foarte interesant.

AMSAT - The Radio Amateur Satellite Corporation

Windows on Earth | Intro

UHF-Satcom.com - The #1 online resource for VHF to EHF satellite reception and monitoring

Studiati foarte atent situl satellitenwelt

Hamradiotube - Pirates

Hamradiotube - UFO - 255.550 Mhz

....etc

Cine vrea detalii despre domeniu - PM
