? Demonstrate the utility of academic program

analysis towards solving real-world reverse

engineering problems

Definitions

? Syntactic methods consider only the encoding

rather than the meaning of a given object, e.g.,

sequences of machine-code bytes or assembly

language instructions, perhaps with wildcards

? Semantic methods consider the meaning of

the object, e.g., the effects of one or more

instructions
