  1. Thomas Ji?ikovský, an alleged Owner of one of the most popular Darknet website ‘Sheep Marketplace,’ has been arrested after laundering around $40 Million, making it one of the biggest exit scams in Darknet history. After the arrest of Silk Road owner 'Ross Ulbricht' in 2013 -- Sheep Marketplace became the next famous anonymous underground marketplace among Black Market customers for selling illicit products, especially drugs. But only after few weeks, Sheep Marketplace was suddenly disappeared and was taken offline by its owner, who had been suspected of stealing $40 million worth of Bitcoins at the time when Bitcoin market value was at the peak. Shortly after this Bitcoin Scam, a Darknet commentator ‘Gwern Branwen’ doxed the owner, and the suspect was identified -- Thomas Ji?ikovský as the owner of the black market website. Unfortunately, Ji?ikovský forgot to hide his identity and residential address from the Internet, which was exposed by his Facebook page. However, immediately after his identity exposure, Ji?ikovský denied his involvement in the Darknet Sheep Marketplace. While Investigating for stolen money from online market, Czech police noticed a suspicious young programmer who attempted to buy a luxury home worth 8.7 Million Czech Koruna ($345,000 USD) in Lusatia, a region in the Czech Republic, under his grandfather’s name. Additional investigation revealed that in January last year, a new bank account of 26-years old Eva Bartošová received a huge payment of almost 900,000 Crowns from a foreign Bitcoin Money Exchange company. However, the young woman was unable to justify the source of the money. According to Czech media, ‘Eva Bartošová’ is ‘Thomas Ji?ikovský’ wife, who helped him to transfer the stolen money to her freshly created bank account. Czech’s Economic Police wing investigated into Ji?ikovský's money and found that the house had been purchased entirely using Bitcoin. Two weeks back, another largest Deep Web drugs marketplace ‘Evolution’ disappeared suddenly with rumors circulating that its owners may have scammed its massive user base and stole $12 Million in Bitcoin Source

  4. The administrators of one of the darknet’s most popular markets for drugs and bespoke carjacking services may have just scammed its customers out of untold sums of money. Evolution, the site in question, rose to prominence after the fall of Silk ?Road and its unassuming founder, Ross U?lbricht, with a promise of less fra?ud and greater trust due to its centralized “escrow” system. It was exactly this system that allowed the site’s owners to make off with its users’ bitcoin. The escrow system means that Evolution’s administrators must sign off on transactions before they go through, and the funds are held in escrow before they do. According to a post on the r/darknets? subreddit made by a user named NSWGreat who claimed to have access to the site’s back end, Evolution’s administrators—Verto and Kimble—have shut down the market and taken everyone’s funds stored in the market’s “escrow” vaults. This is a version of the “exit sca?m,” a known darknet scam that involves a seller collecting a user’s Bitcoin without mailing their packages and then disappearing without a trace. "This may fuck my business pretty good” If the Evolution administrators did scam the site's users, posts on Agora and Reddit indicate that the amount could be in the millions, with users having tens of thousands of dollars worth of bitcoin in escrow. “I am so sorry, but Verto and Kimble have fucked us all. I have over $20,000 in escrow myself from sales,” wrote NSWGreat. “I can't fucking believe it, absolute scum. I am giving this warning to you all as soon as I possibly could of.” A similar sc?am was carried out at another one of Silk Road’s successors, a market called Sheep, in 2013. Sheep administrators announced that the site had been robbed of bitcoin by a vendor, and shut itself down. Of course, there was no way of telling whether the site was really taken advantage of, or if the administrators hadn’t taken off with the bitcoin themselves. Although Evolution’s forums are currently down—along with the site, lending weight to NSWGreat’s claims—on the forum of Evolution’s competitor market, Agora, users were upset. One vendor, TheRealNurseJoy, posted that they were “enthusiastically accepting donations since Evolution just stole a shite load of money” from them. Another vendor, Trust-In-Us, wrote, “Looks like I am out a good amount of money. This may fuck my business pretty good.” The responses from redditors ranged from shock and awe to bitter desperation. One user who claimed to have 50 bitcoin in escrow on Evolution, the equivalent of roughly $14,000, commented, “I OWE MONEY AND CANT PAY IF THIS IS TRUE. MY LIFES IN DANGER. PLEASE DONT BE TRUE PLEASE.” Some users were more skeptical, however, despite vendors claiming to be out Bitcoin and everyone having a general meltdown. The only solid proof, some redditors noted, was NSWGreat’s word. When several users asked for screenshots or suggested that they would be nice to have, NSWGreat responded by saying they “don’t take screenshots anyway.” Who you believe depends on who you trust, and on the darknet, trust matters more than you’d think. 8. Canadian Bitcoin exchange Cavirtex, said to be the country's largest, will shut its doors after its two factor authentication credentials were probably compromised. The breach, spotted last Sunday, affected two factor secrets and hashed passwords stored in an older database and did not match log in details to identification records. "Because security and the safety of customer funds are paramount to our mission and the success of Bitcoin in general, Cavirtex has determined to cease active operations in the Bitcoin business and to return all customer funds," the company wrote in a statement. "We believe that the damage to the company's reputation caused by the potential compromise will significantly harm our ability to continue to operate successfully. "As a result of the potential compromise of our database we cannot be certain of the confidentiality of account credentials." Cavirtex said it was solvent and could allow customers to withdraw cash up to 25 March this year. Users were encouraged to change their passwords immediately and wipe Cavirtex browser cookies. The company said it had not lost customer funds. Source
  9. Even as Bitcoin is starting to shake things up in the US, all is not well in the cryptocurrency world. China-based Bitcoin exchange Bter was hacked on Valentine’s Day and $1.75 million worth of Bitcoin was stolen. The company hasn’t revealed much about the breach, except that 7,170 BTC was taken from its cold (offline) wallet on February 14 via a single transaction (link) and that the platform is suspending operations until further notice. The company has offered a bounty of 720 BTC – about $170,000 – for the retrieval of the stolen currency. It says it will arrange withdrawals of unaffected funds at a later date. This is the second major Bitcoin hack in the past two months. Slovenian exchange Bitstamp lost about $5 million worth of currency in January but has since resumed service. More positively, Coinbase launched the first US Bitcoin exchange last month, ahead of the launch of Lunar, a competitor backed by the Winklevoss twins. It’s likely that this year’s debate around Bitcoin will center more on security than whether businesses or individuals choose to adopt the currency. 15. Fortress Investment Group purchased $20m worth of bitcoins last year, according to a recent filing with the SEC. Back in December it was rumoured that Fortress had plans to launch a bitcoin investment fund. The news was first reported by CNN, but it could not be confirmed until now. Fortress is said to be developing a new investment vehicle based on bitcoin which is expected to be an unlisted Exchange Traded Fund (ETF). The move appears to have been connected to San Francisco-based Pantera Capital. Pantera then registered an investment advisor entity called Pantera Bitcoin Advisors LLC and it filed the necessary paperwork with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). $20m for bitcoins last year According to the 10-K filed with the SEC by Fortress, the investment group set aside $20m for the purchase of bitcoins in 2013. The $20m represents a balance sheet investment by Fortress, and no Fortress-managed funds were used in conjunction with the purchase. The filing was scrutinized by Gil Luria, who tweeted that Fortress may be the first publicly traded company to report substantial bitcoin holdings. As of 31st December, Fortress reported having $16,260,000 worth of bitcoins – listed as “other assets”. In addition, Fortress reported $3,702,000 of losses or unrealized gains on its bitcoin investments, but there is a bit of a caveat, as Fortress points out: Still, with a balance sheet of $2.6bn, the move represents a relatively small investment for the company that may be immaterial given its holdings. But, though the purchase may be exploratory, the price of bitcoin has dropped quite a bit since late 2013, so the $3.7m figure might be even lower now, provided Fortress is still holding on to the coins. It notably did not disclose the holdings in its third quarter filings. What’s the endgame? There has been quite a bit of interest in digital currencies from institutional investors. Several interesting reports have been published over the last week, including bullish reports from Wedbush Securities and PriceWaterhouseCoopers. The Winklevoss twins are also vying for a slice of the market through the Winklevoss Bitcoin Trust. The pair have recently filed a revised ETF with the SEC, but it is still unclear when the Winklevoss ETF will launch. Many of these developments have been overshadowed by the highly publicised collapse of Mt. Gox, DDoS attacks on major exchanges and the arrest of Charlie Shrem. However, if major institutional investors are serious about investing in bitcoin, a deflated price could be just what they need. Hackers and cyber criminals are motivated by status or money and finding new innovative and more creative attacks to achieve this.
