Nytro Posted June 6, 2009 Report Posted June 6, 2009 What is it?The Metasploit Framework is a development platform for creating security tools and exploits. The framework is used by network security professionals to perform penetration tests, system administrators to verify patch installations, product vendors to perform regression testing, and security researchers world-wide. The framework is written in the Ruby programming language and includes components written in C and assembler. What does it do?The framework consists of tools, libraries, modules, and user interfaces. The basic function of the framework is a module launcher, allowing the user to configure an exploit module and launch it at a target system. If the exploit succeeds, the payload is executed on the target and the user is provided with a shell to interact with the payload.About the Metasploit FrameworkThe framework has existed in three different versions since July of 2003. The first version (1.0) was written by H D Moore, using the Perl scripting language, and provided a curses-based frontend. The second version (2.x), also written in Perl, was a collaboration between spoonm, Matt Miller (skape), H D Moore, and a small number of contributors. The third (3.x) and current version is a complete rewrite using the Ruby language. This version was originally developed by Metasploit LLC and is available for use under the a BSD compatible license.About Metasploit LLCMetasploit LLC was created by the Metasploit development team in 2006 for the purpose of preventing commercial abuse and ensuring the longevity of the project. The LLC owns all rights to the Metasploit software, domains, and trademarks. In 2008, Metasploit LLC changed the license of the Metasploit Framework from proprietary to a true open-source BSD compatible license."If you do publish then, worst case, all that will be accomplished is that you may cause a business somewhere to be compromised, and they may turn to you or your company for compensation for their financial losses. In the best case, due to September 11, 2001, you may end up on various government agencies' "watch lists," and your potential career in the computer business may be altered in ways you did not intend.
