  1. A New Ransomware that poses as Australian Federal Police attempts to turn on the webcams of people watching porn and captures images of them. Once the image of the user is captured, the malware locks the desktop and shows a warning message saying that "they have breached federal laws relating to child pornography, copyright or privacy". The warning message includes the image of the victim. This will certainly horrify the victims. According to WAToday report, the victims are then told to pay a ransom of $100 to $199 within 72 hours. The malware claims that if they failed to, the data in their disk will be wiped. ''We've taken some very interesting calls; some people are very open, while others swear they have been hacked while using Facebook" The WAToday quoted AFP as saying. Source EHackingNews.COM
  2. League of Legends, a multiplayer online video game developed and published by Riot Games for Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X reports that a portion of the North American account has been compromised. According to their report, usernames, email addresses, salted password hashes, and some first and last names were accessed. Investigation reports that around 120,000 transaction records from 2011 that contained hashed and salted credit card numbers have been accessed.'The payment system involved with these records hasn't been used since July of 2011, and this type of payment card information hasn't been collected in any Riot systems since then.'-the blog says. As such they are claiming to take necessary steps to notify and safeguard affected players. Affected players will be contacted via their email ids associated with their accounts to alert them. The players with account in North America are requested to change their passwords to stronger ones which would be hard to guess. Additionally, new security features that are currently in development include: Email verification: all new registrations and account changes will need to be associated with a valid email address (we’ll also require all existing players to provide a valid email address). Two-factor authentication: changes to account email or password will require verification via email or mobile SMS. So lets wait and watch is the Game Over or the Battle is still to be played. 3. Traffic management firm Gigamon has unveiled an update for its GigaVue service that offers IT teams the ability to gain insights on the different traffic demands from different areas of the business. The GigaVue 3.1 update will include a Visibility as a Service (VaaS) add-on within the Flow Mapping process to enable administrators to supply data on the traffic within departments. This could be used by teams such as marketing to analyse visitor traffic, or security teams looking at event monitoring after an incident. Gigamon chief strategy officer Shehzad Merchant said that providing this kind of system will help enterprises benefit from the cloud in internally to gain greater insights into their data. “The notion of multi-tenancy has made its way from the public cloud space into enterprise IT infrastructure as well,” he said. “This solution enables network administrators and services teams to virtualise the Visibility Fabric and offer Visibility as a Service to the different IT departments.” The firm said that this capability will enable organisations to alter management policies on a per-team and per-department basis as needs requires, while maintaining the compliance and privacy controls they have in place across the enterprise. These tenants, who include various IT operations teams, will have the power to dynamically change monitoring and traffic visibility policies on a per-organisation or per-tenant basis without impacting other departmental monitoring polices, while maintaining compliance and privacy. The GigaVue 3.1 update also includes a host of other updates such as role-based access control capabilities and improved workflow displays for monitoring of policy configurations. The update will be launched on 30 September for no additional cost for existing customers of the GigaVue tool. Source V3.CO.UK
  4. Microsoft has lashed out at the German Federal Office for Information (BSI) over claims its Windows 8 operating is unfit for use in government and critical infrastructure areas. In a statement sent to V3 a Microsoft spokesperson said the BSI's claims that companies deploying Windows 8 on machines with a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chip could lose control of their systems are misguided. "Windows has made a fundamental bet on trustworthy hardware and TPM 2.0 is a key component. Based in no small part on lessons learned in the TPM 1.2 timeframe, TPM 2.0 is designed to be on by default with no user interaction required Since most users accept defaults, requiring the user to enable the TPM will lead to IT users being less secure by default and increase the risk that their privacy will be violated. We believe that government policies promoting this result are ill-advised," read the statement. "It is also important to note that any user concerns about TPM 2.0 are addressable. The first concern, generally expressed as 'lack of user control,' is not correct as OEMs have the ability to turn off the TPM in x86 machines; thus, purchasers can purchase machines with TPMs disabled (of course, they will also be unable to utilize the security features enabled by the technology)." Questions about Windows 8's security initially surfaced when reports broke suggesting that a leaked BSI document proved Microsoft had built a back door into the OS, letting it, or the NSA, hijack control of the machine from the end-user. The reports led to wider concerns that Microsoft was helping the NSA, which ran the infamous PRISM campaign, siphon information from companies. The spokesperson moved to quell these rumours, saying, "Since the adoption of the Trustworthy Computing Initiative over 10 years ago, Microsoft has focused relentlessly on the security and privacy of IT users. Indeed, we are committed to building products that are SD3 (Secure by Design, Secure by Default, and Secure in Deployment) and PD3 (Privacy by Design, Privacy by Default, and Privacy in Deployment). It is also important to remember that one cannot have privacy without good security." The BSI reacted to the reports by releasing an official statement criticising the lack of user control in Windows 8. The Microsoft spokesperson attacked this supposition, arguing, "Windows has been designed so that users can clear/reset the TPM for ownership by another OS if they wish. Many TPM functions can also be used by multiple OSes (including Linux) concurrently." Microsoft's rebuttal of the BSI's claims has been backed by members of the security community. F-Secure security research Sean Sullivan told V3 that the BSI has a chequered past regarding Microsoft and it is unlikely that the current accusations have much weight. At the time of publishing the BSI had not responded to V3's request for comment on Microsoft's rebuttal. Source V3.co.uk
  5. PayPal has fixed a critical flaw that allowed an attacker to delete any account at will and replace it with one of their own. In April, security researcher Ionut Cernica discovered that US PayPal account holders could add an email address to someone else's account by visiting a PayPal webpage. This then allowed the account to be deleted, he showed in a demonstration video (beware, old-school techno soundtrack): "After you added an existing email to your account if you go to the account profile and you delete the unconfirmed email, the original account will be deleted too," Cernica's report reads. "After you removed the account, you can make another one with same username with your desired password, but you will have no money and is not confirmed." In order to achieve verified PayPal status, the attacker would simply need to assign a bank account or credit card to the replacement username and go through the standard accreditation procedure. If the scam wasn't spotted quickly, funds could then be siphoned off as soon as they came in. According to the report, PayPal acknowledged the flaw a week later and in May told Cernica that a fix had been issued – but the researcher reported back that the dodge was still possible. The final patch was issued this week, and Cernica has received his bounty for the bug. The bug will net Cernica $3,000 at most, and would be worth many times that on the black market. The case highlights the effectiveness of once-controversial bug bounty programs, something even long-time holdout Microsoft has now acknowledged. ® Author Cernica Ionut aka mah_one @ RST Source TheRegister.co.uk

  9. The National Security Agency paid millions of dollars to cover the costs of major internet companies involved in the Prism surveillance program after a court ruled that some of the agency's activities were unconstitutional, according to top-secret material passed to the Guardian. The technology companies, which the NSA says includes Google, Yahoo, Microsoft and Facebook, incurred the costs to meet new certification demands in the wake of the ruling from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance (Fisa) court. The October 2011 judgment, which was declassified on Wednesday by the Obama administration, found that the NSA's inability to separate purely domestic communications from foreign traffic violated the fourth amendment. While the ruling did not concern the Prism program directly, documents passed to the Guardian by whistleblower Edward Snowden describe the problems the decision created for the agency and the efforts required to bring operations into compliance. The material provides the first evidence of a financial relationship between the tech companies and the NSA. The intelligence agency requires the Fisa court to sign annual "certifications" that provide the legal framework for surveillance operations. But in the wake of the court judgment these were only being renewed on a temporary basis while the agency worked on a solution to the processes that had been ruled illegal. An NSA newsletter entry, marked top secret and dated December 2012, discloses the huge costs this entailed. "Last year's problems resulted in multiple extensions to the certifications' expiration dates which cost millions of dollars for Prism providers to implement each successive extension – costs covered by Special Source Operations," it says. An NSA newsletter entry dated December 2012 disclosing the costs of new certification demands. Photograph: guardian.co.uk Special Source Operations, described by Snowden as the "crown jewel" of the NSA, handles all surveillance programs, such as Prism, that rely on "corporate partnerships" with telecoms and internet providers to access communications data. The disclosure that taxpayers' money was used to cover the companies' compliance costs raises new questions over the relationship between Silicon Valley and the NSA. Since the existence of the program was first revealed by the Guardian and the Washington Post on June 6, the companies have repeatedly denied all knowledge of it and insisted they only hand over user data in response to specific legal requests from the authorities. An earlier newsletter, which is undated, states that the Prism providers were all given new certifications within days of the Fisa court ruling. "All Prism providers, except Yahoo and Google, were successfully transitioned to the new certifications. We expect Yahoo and Google to complete transitioning by Friday 6 October." An earlier undated newsletter after the Fisa court ruling on certifications. Photograph: guardian.co.uk The Guardian invited the companies to respond to the new material and asked each one specific questions about the scale of the costs they incurred, the form of the reimbursement and whether they had received any other payments from the NSA in relation to the Prism program. A Yahoo spokesperson said: "Federal law requires the US government to reimburse providers for costs incurred to respond to compulsory legal process imposed by the government. We have requested reimbursement consistent with this law." Asked about the reimbursement of costs relating to compliance with Fisa court certifications, Facebook responded by saying it had "never received any compensation in connection with responding to a government data request". Google did not answer any of the specific questions put to it, and provided only a general statement denying it had joined Prism or any other surveillance program. It added: "We await the US government's response to our petition to publish more national security request data, which will show that our compliance with American national security laws falls far short of the wild claims still being made in the press today." Microsoft declined to give a response on the record. The responses further expose the gap between how the NSA describes the operation of its Prism collection program and what the companies themselves say. Prism operates under section 702 of the Fisa Amendments Act, which authorises the NSA to target without a warrant the communications of foreign nationals believed to be not on US soil. But Snowden's revelations have shown that US emails and calls are collected in large quantities in the course of these 702 operations, either deliberately because the individual has been in contact with a foreign intelligence target or inadvertently because the NSA is unable to separate out purely domestic communications. Last week, the Washington Post revealed documents from Snowden that showed the NSA breached privacy rules thousands of times a year, in the face of repeated assurances from Barack Obama and other senior intelligence figures that there was no evidence of unauthorised surveillance of Americans. The newly declassified court ruling, by then chief Fisa judge John Bates, also revealed serious issues with how the NSA handled the US communications it was sweeping up under its foreign intelligence authorisations. The judgment revealed that the NSA was collecting up to 56,000 wholly US internet communications per year in the three years until the court intervened. Bates also rebuked the agency for misrepresenting the true scope of a major collection program for the third time in three years. The NSA newsletters say the agency's response to the ruling was to work on a "conservative solution in which higher-risk collection would be sequestered". At the same time, one entry states, the NSA's general counsel was considering filing an appeal. The Guardian informed the White House, the NSA and the office of the director of national intelligence that it planned to publish the documents and asked whether the spy agency routinely covered all the costs of the Prism providers and what the annual cost was to the US. The NSA declined to comment beyond requesting the redaction of the name of an individual staffer in one of the documents. UPDATE: After publication, Microsoft issued a statement to the Guardian on Friday afternoon. A spokesperson for Microsoft, which seeks reimbursement from the government on a case-by-case basis, said: "Microsoft only complies with court orders because it is legally ordered to, not because it is reimbursed for the work. We could have a more informed discussion of these issues if providers could share additional information, including aggregate statistics on the number of any national security orders they may receive." 10. Yahoo! a atras în luna iulie în SUA mai mul?i vizitatori decât Google, pentru prima oar? dup? mai 2011, ceea ce arat? c? eforturile f?cute de Marissa Mayer, CEO-ul companiei, pentru redresarea gigantului IT american dau roade, scrie Blommberg. Num?rul utilizatorilor Google a crescut u?or – sub 1%. De când a preluat conducerea Yahoo! în iulie anul trecut, Marissa Mayer i-a îndrumat pe dezvoltatori ?i ingineri s? îmbun?t??easc? produsele ?i serviciile companiei. Ea a restructurat pagina de pornire a portalului Yahoo!, e-mail-ul, precum ?i aplica?iile legate de starea vremii. Si in engleza, articolul mult mai complet : For the first time in more than two years, Yahoo sites were the most visited in the country in July, according to a monthly report from comScore, which tracks unique visitors to U.S. properties across the Web. With 196.6 million visitors to 192.3 million who visited Google properties, Yahoo (YHOO, Fortune 500) bested its competitor, which has long held onto the top spot, for the first time since May 2011. Yahoo's unique visitors were up by roughly 20% compared to July of last year, when it came in third behind Google and Microsoft (MSFT, Fortune 500), according to comScore. July's no. 1 spot is a notable win for Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer, who has made a number of changes since taking over the troubled company last July. Yahoo did not respond to a request for comment. The comScore report is inclusive of desktop traffic only. A more comprehensive report is due out next week. Though Google typically beats Yahoo handily in mobile traffic, Mayer has noted that Yahoo has seen a recent uptick in mobile. Since Mayer took the reins, the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company has acquired more than a dozen start-ups, most notably Tumblr, and revamped a number of the sites. Related: Study: Smarter, richer people use Google Traffic for Tumblr -- which was the web's 28th most popular U.S. property in July, according to the report -- did not directly contribute to Yahoo's visitor tally, said Andrew Lipsman, comScore's vice president of industry analysis. In an earnings call last month, Mayer noted that Yahoo page views were rising after more than a year of declines, citing recently refreshed versions of Yahoo mail, weather, sports, news and Tumblr, both on desktop and mobile. The revamped Yahoo mail app for tablets, for instance, brought a 120% increase in daily active Yahoo mail users, according to the company. Mayer has repeatedly said that she wants the company to focus on consumers' "daily habits" in order to make products that will become a part of users' routines. Yahoo's stock was down slightly Wednesday, but is up more than 80% from a year ago. To top of page Source : Zf.Ro & Cnn.Com
