Judecatorii unei instante din Los Angeles l-au condamnat la numai patru ani de inchisoare dupa ce, pe tot parcursul procesului, hackerul risca nu mai putin de 60 de ani de stat la mititica. Hackerul de 27 de ani pledase vinovat inca din aprilie 2008 dupa ce a accesat sute de mii de computere din Statele Unite pentru a fura informatii confidentiale. Capul de acuzare a fost insa fraudarea unei companii olandeze de publicitate pe Internet dar si fraudarea companiei PayPal cu mai mult de 19.000 de dolari americani. Pe scurt, Schiefer si amicii lui au creat o retea de tip bot net pentru a fura identitatile utilizatorilor din reteaua gandita de ei. Odata “imprumutata” identitatea virtuala, hackerii deveneau simpli hoti care buzunareau companii cu activitate pe Internet mai mult sau mai putin cunoscute. Interesant este faptul ca John Schiefer risca acum un an nu mai putin de 60 de ani de inchisoare si o amenda de 1,75 milioane de dolari, iar acum a fost condamnat la doar patru ani de puscarie (probabil cu suspendare) si obligativitatea platii a doar 19.000 de dolari.
