Researchers have developed a groundbreaking new lithium ion battery that charges super quickly and lasts 10 times longer than today’s batteries. It’ll be on the market within two years. Sick of waiting an hour for your phone to charge before you leave the house? Researchers at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore have come up with the best solution yet - a lithium ion battery that charges to 70 percent in just two minutes. Even better, it also lasts for 20 years, and will reportedly be available to the public within two years. Rechargeable lithium ion batteries are already common in our mobile phones, tablets and laptops - but most only last around 500 recharge cycles, which is around two to three years of typical use. And at the moment batteries take around two hours to fully charge. The new battery drastically improves this process, and will allow you to charge your phone while you look for your keys on the way out the door. It would also help make electric vehicles a more viable alternative to fossil-fuel-powered cars, by reducing battery replacement costs and allowing drivers to recharge their cars in minutes. “Electric cars will be able to increase their range dramatically, with just five minutes of charging, which is on par with the time needed to pump petrol for current cars,” said Professor Chen Xiaodong who led the study, in a press release. “Equally important, we can now drastically cut down the toxic waste generated by disposed batteries, since our batteries last 10 times longer than the current generation of lithium-ion batteries.” The breakthrough came after the scientists replaced the traditional graphite that makes up the anode (the negative pole of the battery) in lithium-ion batteries with a new gel material made from titanium dioxide nanotubes that they created themselves. These nanotubes are a thousand times thinner than a human hair, and they speed up the rate at which electrons and ions can transfer in and out of the batteries, allowing for super-fast charging. They also allow more energy to be packed into the batteries. This means that the battery can now offer 10,000 charging cycles, instead of the usual 500. Even better, the new batteries will be relatively cheap, as titanium dioxide is inexpensive and already readily available in soil. The team has published details on how they formed the titanium dioxide gel in Advanced Materials, and have already had the technology licensed to eventually produce the devices. Late one night in February 2011, 29-year old Dan Saunders was drinking with friends at the Bulls Head Hotel in Wangaratta, north-eastern Victoria. Out of cash, he went around the corner to a National Australia Bank (NAB)automatic teller machine. With just three dollars in his savings account, the next round of drinks would have to go on his MasterCard, courtesy of a cash transfer from his credit card account. He checked the balance on his MasterCard. "Balance unavailable at this time" the message came back. Okay, he thought, I'll still try to transfer AU$200 (NZ$220) from my credit card to my savings account. When he tried to do this, the words, "Transaction cancelled'' appeared on the ATM screen and the card was spat out. Ali’ informed The Hacker News about this vulnerability 4 months ago, which could be used by the cyber criminals in the targeted attacks. At that time, Mr.Yasser secretly demonstrated the vulnerability step-by-step to ‘The Hacker News’ team and we confirmed - IT WORKS. Since it was not addressed by the eBay security team, we kept the technical details of this vulnerability hidden from our readers. But, as we promised to share the technical details of this interesting flaw, once after eBay team patch it. So, Here we go! The vulnerability Yasser found could allow you to Reset Password of any eBay user account and that too without any user interaction or dependency. The only thing you required is the login email ID or username of the victim you want to hack. UT HOW TO HACK ANY eBAY ACCOUNT? Basically to recover the forgotten password, user is first redirected to a password reset page, where eBay page first generates a random code value as HTML form parameter “reqinput”, which is visible to the attacker as well using Browser’s inspect element tool. After the user provides his/her email id and presses the submit button, eBay generates a second random code, which is unknown to anybody else except the users themselves, and send the code along with a password reset link to the eBay user with the registered email address. Once the user clicks on the password reset link provided in the email, user will be redirected to an eBay page with new password set option, where the user only needs to enter a new password twice and has to submit it, in order to reset his eBay account password. HERE THE VULNERABILITY RESIDES Yasser noticed that instead of using the secret code, the new password HTTP request sends the same respective “reqinput” value that has been generated in the first request, when the user clicked on reset password and which is known to the attacker, as shown: As Proof-of-Concept, the researcher targeted one of our team members’ temporary account with email address info@thehackernews.com. First he made a password reset request at eBay for the targeted email ID and saved the generated ‘reqinput’ value from the inspect element. Then he directly crafted a new HTTP request to the eBay server at password reset form action with the known “reqinput” value, new password, confirm password and password strength parameters. BANG!! Reportedly, the attack may eclipse the shocking data breach that occurred at Target Corp. (TGT) over the 2013 holiday season. Security researcher Brian Krebs caught wind of the hack when a massive batch of millions of stolen credit cards was offered up for sale on cybercrime hub rescator[dot]cc. Google is to pay out at least $19 million to Android users whose children were tricked into making expensive in-app purchases on smartphones and tablets. The Federal Trade Commission has been investigating mobile purchases for the last three years, and Apple agreed at the beginning of the year to a settlement. Amazon was also investigated and plans to appeal against the charges. In agreeing to repay the money, Google has effectively admitted that apps available in Google Play may be deceptive. The brunt of the FTC case centers around the idea that it was not made clear to parents that their children would be able to make purchases within apps without authorization. Many of these in-app purchases are to be found in games where players are encouraged into parting with money in return for extra lives, game power-ups, or to unlock new levels. The FTC complained that since 2011 Google had indulged in unfair practices that left parents with bills of hundreds of dollars. FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez said: For millions of American families, smartphones and tablets have become a part of their daily lives. As more Americans embrace mobile technology, it’s vital to remind companies that time-tested consumer protections still apply, including that consumers should not be charged for purchases they did not authorize.
