  4. Researchers have developed a groundbreaking new lithium ion battery that charges super quickly and lasts 10 times longer than today’s batteries. It’ll be on the market within two years. Sick of waiting an hour for your phone to charge before you leave the house? Researchers at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore have come up with the best solution yet - a lithium ion battery that charges to 70 percent in just two minutes. Even better, it also lasts for 20 years, and will reportedly be available to the public within two years. Rechargeable lithium ion batteries are already common in our mobile phones, tablets and laptops - but most only last around 500 recharge cycles, which is around two to three years of typical use. And at the moment batteries take around two hours to fully charge. The new battery drastically improves this process, and will allow you to charge your phone while you look for your keys on the way out the door. It would also help make electric vehicles a more viable alternative to fossil-fuel-powered cars, by reducing battery replacement costs and allowing drivers to recharge their cars in minutes. “Electric cars will be able to increase their range dramatically, with just five minutes of charging, which is on par with the time needed to pump petrol for current cars,” said Professor Chen Xiaodong who led the study, in a press release. “Equally important, we can now drastically cut down the toxic waste generated by disposed batteries, since our batteries last 10 times longer than the current generation of lithium-ion batteries.” The breakthrough came after the scientists replaced the traditional graphite that makes up the anode (the negative pole of the battery) in lithium-ion batteries with a new gel material made from titanium dioxide nanotubes that they created themselves. These nanotubes are a thousand times thinner than a human hair, and they speed up the rate at which electrons and ions can transfer in and out of the batteries, allowing for super-fast charging. They also allow more energy to be packed into the batteries. This means that the battery can now offer 10,000 charging cycles, instead of the usual 500. Even better, the new batteries will be relatively cheap, as titanium dioxide is inexpensive and already readily available in soil. The team has published details on how they formed the titanium dioxide gel in Advanced Materials, and have already had the technology licensed to eventually produce the devices. They expect they’ll be on the market within two years. This new battery charges to 70% in two minutes, and lasts for 20 years

  9. HIGH FLYER: Dan Saunders was earning AU$700 a week when he discovered and then exploited an ATM loophole. In the beginning, it didn't feel like stealing. It was more like the old Monopoly windfall, a bank error in the player's favour. Late one night in February 2011, 29-year old Dan Saunders was drinking with friends at the Bulls Head Hotel in Wangaratta, north-eastern Victoria. Out of cash, he went around the corner to a National Australia Bank (NAB)automatic teller machine. With just three dollars in his savings account, the next round of drinks would have to go on his MasterCard, courtesy of a cash transfer from his credit card account. He checked the balance on his MasterCard. "Balance unavailable at this time" the message came back. Okay, he thought, I'll still try to transfer AU$200 (NZ$220) from my credit card to my savings account. When he tried to do this, the words, "Transaction cancelled'' appeared on the ATM screen and the card was spat out. Puzzled, he reinserted his card and checked the balance on his linked savings account: AU$203 in credit. Sweet, he thought, and took out AU$200 cash and returned to the bar. On the way home, and pleasantly drunk, Saunders passed the same ATM. Let's see if that still works, he thought. Once again, the words, "Balance unavailable at this time'' flashed up on the screen, so he transferred another AU$200 from his MasterCard to his savings account: it went through as before. This is like a magic show, he thought. Let's see how much I can get. He transferred and withdrew AU$500, then another AU$500 and then AU$600. He had two NAB ATM cards: a MasterCard credit card and a Visa debit card, each with a AU$1000 daily limit. So he maxed both of them out - a total of AU$2000 - and went home to bed. articol intreg

  11. Four month ago, a massive data breach on the eBay website affected 145 million registered users worldwide after its database was compromised. Meanwhile, another critical vulnerability on the eBay website was reported, allowing an attacker to hijack millions of user accounts in bulk. An Egyptian security researcher ‘Yasser H. Ali’ informed The Hacker News about this vulnerability 4 months ago, which could be used by the cyber criminals in the targeted attacks. At that time, Mr.Yasser secretly demonstrated the vulnerability step-by-step to ‘The Hacker News’ team and we confirmed - IT WORKS. Since it was not addressed by the eBay security team, we kept the technical details of this vulnerability hidden from our readers. But, as we promised to share the technical details of this interesting flaw, once after eBay team patch it. So, Here we go! The vulnerability Yasser found could allow you to Reset Password of any eBay user account and that too without any user interaction or dependency. The only thing you required is the login email ID or username of the victim you want to hack. UT HOW TO HACK ANY eBAY ACCOUNT? Basically to recover the forgotten password, user is first redirected to a password reset page, where eBay page first generates a random code value as HTML form parameter “reqinput”, which is visible to the attacker as well using Browser’s inspect element tool. After the user provides his/her email id and presses the submit button, eBay generates a second random code, which is unknown to anybody else except the users themselves, and send the code along with a password reset link to the eBay user with the registered email address. Once the user clicks on the password reset link provided in the email, user will be redirected to an eBay page with new password set option, where the user only needs to enter a new password twice and has to submit it, in order to reset his eBay account password. HERE THE VULNERABILITY RESIDES Yasser noticed that instead of using the secret code, the new password HTTP request sends the same respective “reqinput” value that has been generated in the first request, when the user clicked on reset password and which is known to the attacker, as shown: As Proof-of-Concept, the researcher targeted one of our team members’ temporary account with email address info@thehackernews.com. First he made a password reset request at eBay for the targeted email ID and saved the generated ‘reqinput’ value from the inspect element. Then he directly crafted a new HTTP request to the eBay server at password reset form action with the known “reqinput” value, new password, confirm password and password strength parameters. BANG!! He successfully able to reset our eBay account password without our team member’s interaction within a while. LARGE SCALE AUTOMATED ATTACK A sophisticated hacker could had launched an automated mass password reset request attack for all those email accounts which were leaked in previously reported massive eBay data breach. The company has already patched the vulnerability after Yasser responsibly disclosed the flaw to the eBay security team. But, this 4 months delay in delivering the patch could have compromised millions of eBay users’ accounts in a targeted attack, even if you had changed your password after the data breach. 17. The speculation regarding a PayPal integration with bitcoin has been nearly out of control for the past several weeks. Coin Fire has once again been provided an exclusive direct scoop regarding the integration of bitcoin with PayPal subsidiary BrainTree. Braintree powers billions of dollars in mobile and online payments for some of the world’s fastest growing companies and most reputable merchants. Built by developers for developers, our full-stack payments platform can be integrated in minutes and gives you easy access to new payment options and advanced features as they come on stream. -Brain Tree Press Material provided to Coin Fire Braintree will very shortly announce that it is beginning with a bitcoin integration in to the BrainTree Payments Platform that will allow merchants and vendors to tap in to the one tap purchasing power of PayPal. Braintree will reveal that it will allow merchants to instantly accept bitcoin along with other payment methods and will allow the first $50,000 worth of transactions to be entirely fee-free without the standard transaction fees that the company currently charges merchants via the Braintree Ignition program. The company will also reveal today the new PayPal One Touch integration with Braintree that will allow merchants to begin using a platform agnostic system to accept payments from end users instantly. The system is slated to compete directly with Apple’s upcoming payment platform in that it will operate on a wide variety of devices. The new One Touch system will allow for instant payments with a single touch using debit cards, credit cards, your PayPal balance and even bitcoin payments. The system which has been under a beta test program with some of the largest Braintree partners including Uber and HotelTonight. The One Touch system will allow merchants to also have the protection of PayPal Seller protection on selected purchases. The company has yet to provide if those protections however will be afforded to bitcoin transactions (speculation: likely not). A confirmed source at Braintree stated that the testing of the new platform has been a massive success with merchants using it seeing an increase of over 70% on conversion rates. The program which launched in a limited beta on August 19th has been accelerated recently to make sure the platform is available to others. The timing of the announcement may not come as a surprise to many as Braintree and PayPal have been working to ensure the system is announced before Apple makes waves with the announcement of a new payment platform that is built exclusively for iOS devices. Braintree is hoping that with the announcement that the service is device agnostic to steal some of the thunder from the Apple announcement tomorrow. 19. When you're trapped on a boat, you can easily make fresh water, right? Simply let the sun heat up and evaporate salt water. Then trap the steam, condense it on a plastic surface and collect the fresh water. The liquid even gets sterilized in the process. So why can't people around the world who lack clean drinking water do something similar? Turns out, desalinating or sterilizing water with solar energy is way harder than Hollywood makes it look. The process is super inefficient and way too slow to be practical. "The average yield is only about 1 cup per day," says the U.S. Air Force survival guide, even when you've got eight hours of sun and plenty of water. But engineer Hadi Ghasemi, at the University of Houston, is trying to change that. He and a team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology have developed a cheap material that desalinates water efficiently and fast using solar energy. And the secret to the new technology was sitting right on their desks: the graphite in pencils. Solar sponge: The top layer of graphite soaks up the sun's energy in tiny holes. When drops of liquid fill the holes, the water quickly evaporates. (The beaker looks hot, but the water below the sponge is cool as a cucumber.) The solar still has two layers. The top one contains tiny holes that collect the sun's energy. The bottom layer serves as an insulator that keeps the heat from leaking into the water. The bottom layer also wicks water into the top layer, where it evaporates. Cheap Drinking Water From The Sun, Aided By A Pop Of Pencil Shavings : Goats and Soda : NPR
  20. Reportedly theft may eclipse Target hack, with over 40 million cards believed to be stolen by Russian Hackers Americans may soon be hearing some shocking news as retail giant Home Depot Inc. (HD) has reportedly been linked to a "massive" loss of customer data to hackers operating out of Russia and Eastern Europe. According to intial reports the breach may involve the theft of over 40 million credit cards, stolen using point-of-sale (PoS) malware deployed across most of the retailer's 2,200 U.S. stores. Reportedly, the attack may eclipse the shocking data breach that occurred at Target Corp. (TGT) over the 2013 holiday season. Security researcher Brian Krebs caught wind of the hack when a massive batch of millions of stolen credit cards was offered up for sale on cybercrime hub rescator[dot]cc. The cards were posted under the headings "U.S. Sanctions" and "European Sanctions", titles that suggest that these cybercriminals are looking to legitimize their efforts as a retaliation against the U.S. and European governments for their sanctions against Russia over its involvement in eastern Ukraine. 21. Google is to pay out at least $19 million to Android users whose children were tricked into making expensive in-app purchases on smartphones and tablets. The Federal Trade Commission has been investigating mobile purchases for the last three years, and Apple agreed at the beginning of the year to a settlement. Amazon was also investigated and plans to appeal against the charges. In agreeing to repay the money, Google has effectively admitted that apps available in Google Play may be deceptive. The brunt of the FTC case centers around the idea that it was not made clear to parents that their children would be able to make purchases within apps without authorization. Many of these in-app purchases are to be found in games where players are encouraged into parting with money in return for extra lives, game power-ups, or to unlock new levels. The FTC complained that since 2011 Google had indulged in unfair practices that left parents with bills of hundreds of dollars. FTC Chairwoman Edith Ramirez said: For millions of American families, smartphones and tablets have become a part of their daily lives. As more Americans embrace mobile technology, it’s vital to remind companies that time-tested consumer protections still apply, including that consumers should not be charged for purchases they did not authorize. In 2012, Google did take steps to attempt to keep users informed of purchases. A popup was introduced that required a password to be entered before a purchase could be made, but the FTC found that the password was not required again for 30 minutes. During this time, it was possible to make unlimited in-app purchases, resulting in hefty bills. Google is required to contact all Android users who have made in-app purchases within 15 days of the FTC's order being finalized. Refunds must be made promptly, and if after one year Google has paid out less than $19 million, the remainder must be paid to the FTC. Google to cough up $19 million in kids' in-app purchases case
